7 Tips When Running at Night
Running after a long day at school or work is a great stress buster. It relaxes us and gives us a much-needed endorphine boost. However, running at night can expose us to certain risks. Here are 8 tips on how you can stay safe while you’re out on the road as the sun sets.
1. Pay attention
As you reflect on the day’s events, it’s easy to zone out when you’re running at night. Make it a habit to always be aware of your surroundings. Are there potholes? Is there a heavy volume of cars? Are there other runners on the road? Is the road well-lit? Staying alert is crucial in preventing unnecessary accidents.
2. Run in a place you’re familiar with
Evening is not the best time to explore a new route or go somewhere off the beaten track. Stick to places that you know like the back of your hand. Don’t run the same route every night (especially in low populated areas) as stalkers may notice the pattern and be able track you.

3. Carry a mobile phone and a whistle with you
A mobile phone comes in handy just in case you need to get in touch with friends and family. A whistle worn around the neck can call the attention of passersby should you need assistance.
4. Run against traffic
Running against oncoming traffic gives drivers a clear view of what’s ahead, so they have time to steer clear of you if necessary. Ideally, you should avoid running during rush hour – the fewer cars there are on the road, the better for you.
5. Run with a buddy or a group
There is strength in numbers. Running with a buddy or joining a running group makes running safer and more fun!
6. Skip the earphones
Listening to music can help keep your energy up – but do stay safe by using just one earbud so your other ear can hear oncoming cars and people.
7. Wear light-reflecting running gear
Use neon, light-reflecting running clothes and shoes to increase your visibility on the road. Wearing a head lamp can also alert vehicles and other runners of where you are.
