The Department of Health (DOH) announced today, July 6, 2015, the second case of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) in the Philippines.
Apparently, a 36-year-old man from the Middle East had been referred to the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM) in Muntinlupa last Saturday and was tested positive for a “low virus load of MERS-CoV”.
Currently, the Department of Health is monitoring eight people who had been in close contact with the said patient. One of them has also been confined at the RITM after showing symptoms, while the rest are quarantined at home.
This is the second MERS-CoV case in the country. The first one was of a pregnant Filipina nurse who arrived from Saudi Arabia. She was tested in February and has recovered. 401 out of the 413 other passengers who were on the plane with the Pinay nurse were also tested and turned out negative.
People with this kind of virus have experienced flu-like illness with symptoms of fever, cough, and shortness of breath.
DOH also reminds the public that there is no need for alarm, and there is no record of community transmission of the virus. But everyone is still asked to take precaution just in case you are experiencing flu-like symptoms.
Here are 7 ways to help prevent the spreading of MERS-CoV:
1. Stay home
2. Separate yourself from other people in your home
3. Call ahead before visiting your doctor
4. Wear a facemask
5. Cover your coughs and sneezes
6. Wash your hands
7. Avoid sharing household items
