  1. Train and Prepare – As a runner, you already possess excellent aerobic fitness and endurance, which is beneficial for mountain hiking. However, you need to prepare for the different physical stresses on your legs, back, and shoulders that come with climbing. This includes running more uphills, climbing stairs, and doing lunges at least a few weeks before your hike.
  2. Bring Enough Food and Hydration – Just like in races, proper nutrition and hydration are crucial in mountaineering. Pack enough food for all the meals you will consume while in the wilderness. For trail food, I usually bring nuts, gelatin, and chocolates. Always carry emergency rations. Using portable stoves for cooking is encouraged over making campfires due to their lesser environmental impact. Plan ahead for possible water sources, such as rivers, springs, or communities, especially for multi-day hikes.
  3. Wear Proper Clothing and Gear – Two essential items are a comfortable backpack and a good pair of trekking shoes. The backpack size depends on the duration of your trip: a 25-30L bag for a day hike, a 50L pack for a multi-day hike, and something in between for an overnight climb. Wear bright-colored clothes to increase visibility. Other necessities include a raincoat, a cap, a headlamp (always be prepared for a night trek), a whistle (six blasts per minute is the international distress signal), a first-aid kit, and personal medicines.
  4. Leave No Trace – Leave what you find as you found it. Respect wildlife (both plants and animals) and observe from a distance. Bring down every piece of trash you bring up the mountain, preferably in individual trash bags for easier transport. Climb in small groups to reduce environmental impact. Be considerate of other hikers by yielding on trails and minimizing noise in campsites.
  5. Research – Plan ahead and prepare by researching the specific mountain you plan to hike. Many resources are available online, such as the PH Mountains app. Check the weather and prepare accordingly; cancel if necessary, such as in the event of a typhoon. Assign a contact person who will not join the hike and keep them updated on your group’s whereabouts throughout the trip.
  6. Enjoy the Great Outdoors – Unlike races, mountaineering encourages a slower pace to enjoy the scenery and the majesty of nature. Take your time to let it all in. Don’t hesitate to make new friends. Join a local mountaineering club and learn from the experiences of its members.

“We came. We saw. But we never conquered. Because through the years, the mountains have remained — conquering us with every storm, with every wildflower, and with every windswept peak. That is why we keep on climbing: Because the mountains have conquered us.” — Kris Lacabax

  4. The problem with mountain hiking is : No time, No Money and You can’t do it alone. You dont want to end up like James Franco in the movie 127 Hours

  5. You can allot 1k for your first climb and that will be enough for a day climb like Pico de Loro or My Batulao. You can go on your own if you are one person who don’t get lost easily and brave enough to trail the mountains. It is an outdoor sports where you should be prepared mentally and physically. Just like running at dawn on your own, running in the rain or even joining a 10km race. There will always be risks involved but if you have a positive mindset and the right preparation,it is an outdoor sport that does wonders to our health and well being.
