Ms_Mars:
Hello CarL and welcome to Pinoyfitness.com.
CarL:
Hi and thank you Ms_Mars, salamat sa invite and excited na po ako for this interview.
Ms_Mars:
That’s good to know, CarL. We’re also as excited. Simulan na natin?
CarL:
Yes!
Ms_Mars:
People are curious but not everyone may know yet, that you were formerly obese. Was it something acquired or hereditary?
CarL:
Bale, nagsimula nung bata ako, Siguro mga, 6 or 7 years old? Dun na ako nag-start lumaki. Hanggang mga 16 years old so na-acquire ko. As in sobrang takaw para lumaki ako ng ganun (laughs).
Ms_Mars:
Does it run in the family?
CarL:
Yes sa mother side. Talagang malalaki sila. So kelangan mo talagang alagaan kung ano yung kinakain mo.
Ms_Mars:
So you were eating all kinds of food?
CarL:
Oo. Before talaga. Tsaka maya’t maya (laughs). Ang mama ko bihira siyang magluto ng ulam, so daddy ko laging nag-oorder ng fast food – McDonald’s, Jollibee, pizza so talagang fattening yung mga pagkain.
Ms_Mars:
Did you have health risks? Naging sakitin ka ba?
CarL:
Ms_Mars:
Ibang klase ka pala (laughs). What were the sports that you liked most?
CarL:
Basketball (beams widely!) Kahit ganun yung weight ko, nag-MVP pa nga ako eh. Sa intramurals sa school, tapos meron ding inter-barangay. Lagi nila akong kinukuha. Magaling naman akong mag-basketball kahit ganun ako kalaki. Basketball ang hilig ko talaga.
Ms_Mars:
Ang galing. What player position?
CarL:
Pointguard. And one more sport, yung soccer. So I decided to stop na lang. But i tried training for one month.
Ms_Mars:
Share with us how you managed to lose all those weight. And how your dad supported you?
CarL:
Nakita nung daddy kong pursigidong mag-gym ako so after a month, he enrolled me sa Fitness First, eversince, until now dun pa rin ako. So sineryoso ko. Because minsan may time na tinatamad ka.
Ms_Mars:
Naku totoo yan. How soon was the effect ng mga gym workouts?
CarL:
Ms_Mars:
And how true you able to shed off and lose all that excess weight in just a year?
CarL:
Yup! One year lang, Ms.Mars. Maximum weight ko then was 240lbs, at 16 yrs old with a height of 5’7″ that time ah. So talagang malapad.
Ms_Mars:
How young are you and anong average weight mo now?
CarL:
Twenty-two years old turning 23. Weight 148 lbs. at 5’9″ tall.
Ms_Mars:
Amazing transformation! And what about your fitness regimen?
CarL:
Almost everyday nagwo-work out ako para laging fit. Cardio and leg exercises. Nagjo-jogging din ako sa MOA area. Hindi buo araw ko kapag hindi ako nakakatakbo – 5K minimum or at least between 10K to 12K a day on the road or sa treadmill.
Ms_Mars:
Ang daming inggit sa washboard abs and physique mo. Pang fitness magazine! Congrats!
CarL:
(Laughs) Salamat po. Hard work and pagpu-pursige talaga ang kailangan. Dapat may goal. Or olive oil. So depende.
Ms_Mars:
That’s good advice. You are also very close to your family. Na-miss mo sila for quite sometime?
CarL:
Oo naman. Bumalik ako sa family ko sa Pasay. I used to live alone in a QC condo for two years. Kahit na may condo ka, iba eh. Masaya kasi kapag nasa bahay ka with family. So I decided for now to stay kasama sila. Kahit papano magkakasama kami. Nakaka-kwentuhan lagi. Bonding. Kapag wala namang work lagi akong nasa Pasay. Natutuwa ako kapag kasama ko family ko. Masaya!
Ms_Mars:
Good to know tight-knit family kayo. How many other siblings do you have?
CarL:
Apat kami. Three boys and bunsong babae. Siya ang reason bakit ako nasa showbiz courtesy of Be Bench Model Search. Silang dalawa ng Kuya Louie ko, are both married. Parehong may mga panganay. Meron na akong dalawang pamangkin (wide smile). Our youngest si Claudette, nakakasama ko siyang tumakbo. Sa RUNew and Go Natural nag-5K siya. (Laughs)
Ms_Mars:
Sounds unbelievable but is it true na wala kang any formal training in running?
CarL:
Ms_Mars:
That 21K is half marathon and distances na mas mababa…
CarL:
Fun run ang tawag like 10K or 5K (laughs).
Ms_Mars:
Correct! And now you’re a regular participant in weekly runs. Nag-start ka lang more than 2 months ago.
CarL:
Last year pa dapat ako nag-push sa pagtakbo, kaso hindi ko nakahiligan ngayon lang. Naiikot ko itong UP Oval dati like 3 loops, sometimes 4 loops na dire-diretso. No walking. Magandang tumakbo dito sa UP. Parang Camp Aguinaldo ang surroundings. Simula nung nag-run ako daddy ko laging sumasama.
Ms_Mars:
Your first fun run was Goldilocks Run last year?
CarL:
(Note: CarL is being managed by Perry Lansigan of PPL Ent. who’s also handling the careers of Jolina Magdangal, Geoff Eigenmann, LJ Reyes, Angelika dela Cruz, Gabby Eigenmann, Rochelle Pangilinan, Janno Gibbs and Dingdong Dantes, to name a few.)
Ms_Mars:
Surprisingly, in less than a month, you got your first podium medal? Ang galing!
CarL:
Opo sa Rainbow Run! Tuwang-tuwa ako. Naka-3rd place ako dun sa 10K with medal.
Ms_Mars:
A project of the Ladlad Group.
CarL:
Oo, pero masaya. Masaya. Fun run talaga siya (laughs).
(Note: CarL was awarded 3rd place 10K category during Rainbow Run with a time of 0:40:49.)
Ms_Mars:
Ang bilis mo ring nag-level up?! You also ran for Condura Skyway and take note – 42K!
CarL:
(Laughs) Oo nga eh. Gusto ko kasi may progression lagi.
Ms_Mars:
Progression is good motivation but jumping to 42K only after a few 10Ks? Wow!
CarL:
Pero before ako nag-42K Ms_Mars, nag-21K ako during Go Natural last January 15 after ng 10K sa Todo Responde Run. Back to back yun. Time ko was 1:48 yata sa Go Natural. Sayang! Tinakbo ko sa Bull Run 10K lang. Tapos yung 3rd place ko sa Rainbow Run.
Ms_Mars:
Kumusta naman ang first 42K experience for Condura Skyway? Was that your most memorable run event so far?
CarL:
Ms_Mars:
Talaga? May sinugod pala.
CarL:
Meron. Nakakatuwa. At nakakangalay talaga yung 42K. But over-all, okay naman. Ganda ng medal! (Gestures the size of a saucer). Never ko na-expect matapos siya ng time of 3:17?
(Note: CarL’s official 42K time during Condura Skyway 2012 was 3:24:16.)
Ms_Mars:
Nice, nag-Good Samaritan act ka pala.
CarL:
Sa Phil. Dental Run, nagkita uli kami nung same runner. Oo! Pareho kaming nag-10K.
Tapos dun sa Race for the Orphans 10K, yung nag-3rd place, medyo niyabangan niya ako. First time ko ring tumakbo sa Camp Aguinaldo. Maganda ang route. Napansin ko rin, sa running, sa actual event, lahat seryoso, galit-galit pero after the run, okay na, nagkaka-kwentuhan sandali, kinukumusta yung run, bati na uli (laughs).
(Note: CarL was awarded 2nd place in the 10K category of Race for the Orphans with a time of 0:41:50.)
CarL:
Excited na ako for Run United. Goal time ko 1:35!
Ms_Mars:
Attainable. Go for it! So RU1 will be your third 21K run?
CarL:
Yes. Bale third na siya. Yung second 21K ko, sa RUNew event. First time I felt sumakit tuhod ko. Cemented pavement kasi sya hindi sya asphalt like sa The Fort or sa Camp Aguinaldo.
Nag-jog na lang ako the rest of the route. Ang daming lubak. Merong malalim.
(Note: CarL’s official 21K PR for RUNew event was 1:36:56.)
Ms_Mars:
How many pairs of running shoes do you have?
CarL:
Apat yung running shoes ko. Newton pang long distance runs. Nike Lunar pang short distance runs ko. Yung K-Swiss Kwicky Blade Light, hindi ko pa nagagamit. And yung Zoot Ultra Race pinanglalakad ko. I really go for design. Mas gusto ko yung design. I shy away from the analysts kasi baka yung sapatos na dapat para sa akin hindi ko magustuhan.Pero for now, Newton shoes ang madalas kong ginagamit.
Ms_Mars:
Any running idols?
CarL:
Si Mario Maglinao. Ang galing niya at ang bilis pa, wow! Best time niya sa 10K – 30 to 33mins – ang bilis nun grabe! At saka si Coach Rio. Okay si coach, magaling din. I also admire Kikay Runner kasi sa mga female runners, mabilis siya. Mas mababa time ko sa 10K. Even with Bearwin Meilly, mas mabilis din ako pero because of running pumayat din siya.
Ms_Mars:
Yes, all thanks to running. You mentioned na you’re also interested mag-triathlon?
CarL:
Hopefully by September, baka mag-start na kong mag-train for swimming. Yung 102KM,
Ms_Mars, ilang hours yun?
Ms_Mars:
Almost one day. Cut-off time niya is 18hours. At dapat may support crew ka kasi hindi biro ang mag-ultramarathon and kailangan several weeks to months of special various training kung decided kang mag- try for BDM 102K.
CarL:
(Laughs) Sige subukan natin baka next year. Maganda yan, new challenge!
Ms_Mars:
Okay, we will stay tuned for that, CarL. Surprise us! Kunin mo kami as part of your support crew (laughs).
CarL:
(Laughs)
Ms_Mars:
Podium Win vs PR in every run event?
CarL:
Kasi kung habol kong mag-2nd or 3rd, training talaga. Paghandaan kung ano ang ginagawa nila. With my schedule, may tapings pa ako, puyat, sometimes 24 hrs ang trabaho, minsan meron kaming mga regional shows ng Saturdays, minsan Sundays so mahirap din eh. Nag-request ako sa Road Manager ko, kay Paolo to block off 4 to 11AM ng Sundays to give way and may time para tumakbo. Maganda ang running, nakaka-alis ng stress. Enjoy and kahit paano exercise.
Ms_Mars:
That’s very true.So what are your upcoming run events?
CarL:
Naka-reg na po ako for BDO Run and sa Yakult Run. Gusto ko ring i-try yung sa Rogin-E’s Last Man Running?
Ms_Mars:
Wow, sa LMR, para ka nang nag-instant ultramarathon in the city! Good luck!
CarL:
Oo nga eh. Kaya exciting, Ms_Mars!
Ms_Mars:
(Laughs) Ayan, may heads up na, now we know ikaw yung naka-green costume! Take care of your life flags.
CarL:
Itatago ko siya (referring to life flags) ng husto (Laughs)!
Ms_Mars:
And there we go. Maraming salamat. We look forward to having you again here, CarL. Your fitness journey has been very inspiring. That nothing is impossible. Some things are attainable. Now that you’re also into running, and despite your being a newbie, you continue to surprise and impress us with your better and faster PR and performance in every race. That you were really born to run! Your message to our growing community here at pinoyfitness.com please?
CarL:
Thank you rin, Ms_Mars and sa Pinoyfitness. Stay focused. And…good luck!
Ms_Mars:
Out of curiosity CarL, how was your carbo loading nga pala for Condura?
CarL:
That Saturday, kumain lang ako ng favorite chocolate donut – Krispy Kreme. Tapos kinabukasan, race day, kumain ulit ako ng 3 pieces Krispy Kreme before going to Alabang. And after the race, I felt natunaw silang lahat (laughs)!
Note: CarL’s official RU1 21K PR was 1:29:45. Six minutes faster from his goal. Last March 11, he ran for St. Luke’s Eye Run event and was awarded 2nd place 12K with an official time of 0:49:06. And just last March 18, participated at Race Against Raze and placed 3rd 16K category with the official time of 1:06:00. Congrats Mamaw CarL and more podium finish and run power to you!
