I started running in 2010, and over the past 13 years, I’ve run multiple marathons and participated in hundreds of running events. Along the way, I’ve also suffered and recovered from a couple of running injuries. As the Founder of Pinoy Fitness and an avid runner, my journey has been filled with challenges, growth, and self-discovery.

Over the years, my mindset has evolved in profound ways, shaping not only my approach to running but also my perspective on life. In this article, I’ll share five transformative mindset shifts that have guided my path.

1. From Racing to Celebrating – The Joy of the Journey

In my early years of running, I used to race every weekend, always pushing for the next PR. The thrill of competition was exhilarating, but it began to take a toll on my body and mind. Then something shifted. I began to see races not as the ultimate test but as a celebration of the hard work and consistent training I had put in. I found joy in the daily grind, the small improvements, and the camaraderie with fellow athletes. Races became a reward, a time to enjoy the fruits of my labor and celebrate my improvements.

2. From Neglecting Sleep to Embracing Recovery – The Importance of Rest

I used to believe that sleep was for the weak, sacrificing rest to maximize my effort. However, this approach led to fatigue and decreased performance. As I continued to grow and learn, I recognized the vital role that sleep plays in recovery and overall well-being. I began to prioritize sleep, treating it as an essential part of my training rather than something to be minimized or avoided.

3. From Indulgence to Mindfulness – Fueling Performance with Nutrition

I used to think that because I run, I could eat everything I wanted. This mindset was appealing but led to unintended consequences on my performance and well-being. As I continued to evolve, I recognized the importance of nutrition in achieving my running goals. I shifted my mindset from seeing food as a reward or indulgence to viewing it as fuel for better runs.

4. Beating Myself, Not Others – A Personal Growth Perspective

I once focused on beating others and being faster than those around me. But over time, I realized that the true competition was with myself. It’s not about being faster than others; it’s about beating and being a better version of myself now.

5. Listening to My Body – A New Approach to Performance

I used to always push myself to PR during races, even if it meant pushing my body to the limit. Now, I listen to my body. I prioritize how I feel and celebrate the performance my body is capable of providing. This shift has allowed me to develop a more intuitive and respectful relationship with my body, recognizing its signals and honoring its capabilities. It’s a reminder that performance is not just about numbers; it’s about understanding and appreciating our bodies and what they can achieve.

My journey as a runner has been marked by continuous growth and transformation. These mindset shifts have reshaped my approach to fitness and life, teaching me valuable lessons about joy, recovery, mindful nutrition, personal growth, and body awareness. They remind us that our beliefs and mindsets are not fixed; they can evolve, leading us to a more fulfilling and sustainable path. Whether you’re a seasoned athlete or just beginning your fitness journey, I hope these insights inspire you to reflect on your own mindset and consider how you might grow and evolve.
