The Philippine Society of General Surgeons, Inc. (PSGS) is the duly recognized specialty society of general surgeons in the country. The Society’s membership is composed of highly competent, safe, and ethical surgeons, dedicated to provide compassionate and quality health care to the community. One of its primary advocacies is breast cancer awareness.
Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer among women worldwide. Accordingly, breast cancer remains the most common form of cancer in our country. In Asian nations, the Philippines registers the highest incidence of the disease. It is the most common cause of cancer mortality in women. However, the risk of death from breast cancer can be lowered through early detection and treatment. Designing and implementing effective educational programs that increase women’s awareness about breast cancer and promote screening uptake are important steps to reduce the burden affected by breast cancer among women in the Philippines.
“The Pink Run: D’Feeting Breast Cancer” is the primary activity of the PSGS in its advocacy against breast cancer. This annual running event started in 2010 and is aimed at raising public awareness about breast cancer. Its objective is to focus attention on breast cancer during and after the event through educational campaigns, information drives, and lay fora. It is also held to raise funds for the treatment of indigent patients suffering from this dreaded disease and to provide financial help to breast cancer support groups and foundations.
