Earned Not Given
by: Amanda Ramoso

I’m 23 years old. my maximum weight is 98 lbs my height is 5’5. I’m underweight and i started joining fun runs only this year. I run my first 5KM and i tell you running started to beat the person inside myself. As i started joining fun run i also started to received a lot of comments, like “baka makalas ka”, “baka tangayin ka” but it doesn’t stop me. Because running became my ultimate escape from reality.

After I cross every finish line and it made me realize something real and simple, running is not about winning it’s about you and your relationship with yourself, to your family, to your friends. It’s about being able to look in your friend eyes and know you didn’t let them down.

Everytime I run I always tell to myself, “Isn’t about being the best it’s about being better today than you are yesterday.”

I run for so many reason… I run because i enjoy it… I also run because i can.

I run because every time i saw that turning point and the finish line i felt serenity and I love the joy of having high fives with my friends. I don’t know if anyone realize this, but this is what I want to do when I get older… I don’t run to win races or become famous, I run to win my personal race – my race against myself – against being upset, against being lazy, against being passive – I win every time I wear my running shoes, because I have created a new future for myself. I am winning against becoming a person I didn’t want to be.

So I dare you to win, I dare you to start winning, to start trying, to set goals. I dare you to run, don’t worry about how fast or far – just fall in love with it, stay in love with it, play with it, treat it like a friend – because sometimes – running can be the best listener in the world – it will always let you win.

  1. Well said and very inspiring. You are still very young and a lot of races still in the running for you. I started to join races in 2008 and
this keeps me young, vibrant and healthy(mind and body). You might want to join the Osaka Intl Marathon on Oct 27. Two categories, full 42K and hold your breath 8.8K Challenge Run.
You can get in touch with me. I owned a travel agency and we just came from Osaka and was invited by Osaka Government Tourism Bureau (OGTB) to join the Marathon.

  2. Keep on Running… Take it to the next level… I knew you can make it… See you on the road…. Two thumbs up!

  3. i have read this 3 – 5 times and i had goosebumps every single time, esp getting here at this part “…I don’t run to win races or become famous, I run to win my personal race – my race against myself – against being upset, against being lazy, against being passive – I win every time I wear my running shoes, because I have created a new future for myself. .. I started running last April 2013 and my first fun run was the PBA RUN, then NATGEO and RUNRIO. I’m really happy and felt the same way as you.. I registered for PasigRun on Oct.6 2013 and looking forward for more fun runs .. see you God bless

keep it up and thanks for sharing your story =D

  5. relate ako, kasi i’m 5’3 and almost 10lbs underweight for my age and height but it didn’t stop me from running, instead i took it as a challenge kasi some people told me to stop running dahil baka daw maging buto’t balat ako (i’ve been running 21km races in the past few months).. so the challenge really was to put on weight without sacrificing my running schedule, kaya naman i’m glad though i’m still slightly underweight meron nakong nakikitang improvement sa katawan ko and it motivates me even more.. good job amanda, you’re an inspiration to your peers, God bless and run happy!
