This event was my 2nd public bike ride (my first being the 2012 Tour of the Fireflies). Great turnout. It was fun although the sun can be quite brutal. We started about 6am plus. Honorable Franklin Drilon, Mayor Del de Guzman and Miss Earth Marikina Maretony Baldoza graced the event. Marikina has been considered the pioneer in promoting biking. But there’s more work to be done like making sure establishments can accommodate bikes and improving roads and gutters to be fitted for bikers. It was dreadful the moment we went out of Marikina Sports Complex. The gutter was too high and I thought I broke my bike. My bike isn’t exactly high quality but dependable for commuting. Good thing when we came back, the organizers provided wooden planks. The Takbo para sa Marikina Watershed was held at the Marikina Sports Complex as well. We were on one side and they were on the opposite side. At first I thought it would result in overcrowding but the sports complex can accommodate large crowds.
There were hydration stations but I wish they strategically positioned them in places where it wouldn’t cause choking points. Also, a half-time stop or a periodic stop would be appreciated.
I do hope more public bike rides are organized in the future to encourage more people into biking, whether for exercise or for commuting. Unilab said this is just the first of what could possibly be an annual event. COUNT ME IN!
