ARE YOU STRONG ENOUGH? JOIN the La Union KU IKAIKA MARATHON 2012!
JCI Philippines (Junior Chamber International), in its mission to empower young people, is bringing to La Union and the rest of the Northern Philippines, a first-of-its-kind running event: the Ku Ikaika Marathon 2012.
In partnership with Kahuna Beach Resort and Spa, this event will showcase a full 42-kilometer marathon passing through (4) four different areas or tracks: (1) a flat concrete road run, (2) a tobacco/rice/corn field run, (3) a mountain uphill/downhill run, and (4) a beach run.
“Ku IkaiKa” is a Polynesian phrase chosen to aptly describe the whole marathon, which literally translates to “Stand Strong”. Hawaii hosts the Ku Ikaika Surfing Challenge (stand up paddle), one of the most prestigious surfing events in America, where surfers overcome gigantic waves. The La Union Ku Ikaika Marathon will surely challenge not just the physical ability of the runners, but also their will and spirit to endure the race through to the finish line. As the winners and brave challengers of Hawaii’s Ku Ikaika surfing competition are treated with great respect and accolade, the finishers of La Union’s Ku Ikaika Marathon will be regarded with the same because they prove and deserve to be called the real STRONG men and women in the sport of running and that is true in every sense of the word!
It’s not all pain and suffering though. Runners will surely have the chance of discovering the pristine beauty of La Union: its beautiful, breathtaking landscapes—from the coasts and fields of San Juan to rivers of San Gabriel and the ridges of San Fernando City. With San Juan’s famous waves and friendly people, you can definitely say it’s more fun in the Surfing Capital of the Philippines!
Easily accessible both by private or public transport, San Juan, La Union would take six (6) hours by land and forty-five (45) minutes via air travel from Manila. Come with your family and friends to complete your summer experience.
Furthermore, the proceeds of the run will be for a good cause: it is a fund raising effort by the Jaycees in their advocacy to help provide opportunities for youth development.
This marathon is being organized by iRunners Productions.

Sir allan & runrodell, there will be finisher’s medal and finisher’s singlet for the two categories (21k and full marathon).
@iRunners
wow looks exciting and promising po. lots of great beaches along the La Union island stretch.
Hope to be able to run here as well after my Quezon adventure ^_^
interesting run … two birds in one shot – we can join the run and enjoy the swim afterwards. Accommodation rates for Kahuna resorts?
What about camping? Will Kahuna allow tent accommodation and will just use their bathroom and other facilities?
@mars
ganda ng pag kadescribe nya ng ruta :) 4 different types ang dadaanan. kung tama pagkaintindi ko :) kaso saturday marathon ito
tama po kayu, sa lahat ng wow talagang mapapawow po kayu, that is why we call this event as KU IKAIKA Marathon, meaning Stand Strong, all four tracks dadaanan kase ng isang Runner of Full Marathon (Road, Fields, Mountain and Beach as their final lap). Runners who cannot do the Full Ku Ikaika Marathon can try lesser run, Make it Three tracks (Road, Fields and Beach) that is the Half Marathon 21K…or you may try Two tracks (roads and Fields) the 10K run. lastly, can also try Pure Beach Run, the 3k and 5k Beach run!!!all runners all categories will get finishers medal!
Ms. Mars and tryx, this will definitely be an exciting run! Looking forward to seeing you here in La Union. This is also the first full marathon to be held here in the province.
Tryx, we’ll coordinate with Kahuna regarding that and give you feedback as soon as we can. but you can check their website too: https://kahunaresort.com/. there are also other resorts in the area you can choose from. :)
I hope hindi company outing namin nitong dates na to.. :P
@victorscruz:
so what kung company outing ninyo? may nagtatanong ba dito?
sir victorscruz, sana nga sir para makasali kayu sa event na eto, we consider it really to be one of a kind Full Marathon and worth it para dayuhin ng mga non-La Union runners…hope to see you here in San Juan La Union soon!
sir ryan anthony chuva, very welcome din po kayu to join…see you all po!
sana may transpo :)
uwi ako para makatakbo sa event na toh’…hehe!
sir QP we are considering the transpo of runners from manila to La Union the day before the event, it’s a double decker deluxe bus to be sponsored by Kahuna Resort and Spa and Jaycees la Union. We’ll keep you updated bout it…
Barbie…yes thank you for your support, running in Ku Ikaika Marathon will be worth it…
@iRunners: yeba! thanks, sir :)

@iRunners
providing transpo from Manila-La Union is a great idea and will attract more runners to join.
will there be a separate transpo fee or will it be incorporated in the reg fee?
@iRunners
providing transpo will attract more runners to join this event.

@iRunners: free use of facilities at Kahuna?
master mamerto, master we intentionally chose Saturday as the day of the event so that after the event the visiting runners can have time to visit other beautiful tourist spots here in La Union like they can try surfing, zip lining, trekking, beach and mountain resorts hopping, another reason is that we plan to have a victory party after the event and it will happen Saturday night where everybody can go party relax and listen to music, meet other runners after a day of vigorous running, that explains why we chose Saturday so that runners will maximize their participation in the first ever full marathon here in our wonderful province!
Airwolfe ponce, Sir rest assured that official participants of the Marathon will get discounts on all services provided by Kahuna.
Pls visit our website:irunnerscommunity.org for comprehensive details about the La Union ku ikaika Marathon.
photos of singlet design and medal pls.
To all my fella runners let me just quote the words of Niki Valero the President of Junior Chamber International in one his text to his fellow JCIian:”on may 19 2012, 1st JCI-Kahuna La Union International Marathon that will be joined by atleast 1500 runners from all over the country and abroad will choose to run 3k, 5k, 10k, 21k, or 42k in a full marathon, one of the 4 international marathon in the entire country. Will start in Kahuna, proceeding thru the beautiful San Juan countryside and elevating towards WWII battle site Bacsil Ridge in San Fernando City (North-side)and making a roundabout towards San Gabriel town; and then back through the picturesque San Juan surfing beach with finish line in Kahuna beach. This event promises to once again strengthen La Union’s reputation as a premier tourist hub in northern Luzon. Come support us as we run forward to greater success!!!
irunners and stan,
This is exciting. How high is the elevation though? And how about the safety of the runners?
The Bacsil Ridge, located in San Fernando City, La Union, is a monument built to signify the heroic deeds of the Ilocanos who fought the fierce battles that ensued during World War II. The Battle of Bacsil Ridge, which took place in March 1945, was the turning point in the anti-Japanese campaign and is considered as the key that led to the Filipino’s victory in the Battle of Bessang Pass on June 14, 1945.
elevation 750 feet above sea level
100% join ako dito pag may transpo! :)
Please post details po agad pag may update na regarding this para makapag-register na agad. :)
To all my fellow runner, this one i assure you guys, we will work it out and do our best to provide a transpo to fetch and bring you back to manila and adjacent places. After holy week we will post the result of our transactions with the best Bus Companies in the country. We love to see you all here and we want you to enjoy what we planned and prepared for you exciting run here in beautiful and less explored province of La Union!
ChanoMd you can add us on fb search iRunners, we posted singlet design, the prototype will be next…see u in La Union soon.
What about the terrain in 42k (especially in mountain) ? Are we going to use road shoes or trail shoes?
@stan abasolo
can you give me the FB link? tnx
Jojo, the good news is the terrain in the mountains of Bacsil is a fine pavement, because Bacsil is a historic site (WWII Monument is situated on top of it) the road is well maintained by the local government of San Fernando.
Chano, pls visit irunner @ fb for more information and pls visit our website: irunnerscommunity.org for comprehensive infos.

What’s the cut-off time for the marathon? 7 hours?
Lazy Runner..yes sir we will wait till 11am..gun start for 21k is 0430H…we can even extend the time until the last runner arrived, because last runner of 42K will received the “KU IKAIKA AWARD” Standing Strong, finishing the race despite being last, such an inspiration…YAN PO ANG PUSO NG RUNNER, not necessarily competing but BUT overcoming oneself…

nakakuha kami ng reg form kahapon sa Baguio21k nung tumakbo kami dun at on the works nga daw ang shuttle service for Manila registrant. At balita ko rin na “partas bus” daw ang uupahan nila.
ung shuttle from manila to la union free po ba un or discounted lang? and may shuttle din ba going back to manila?
di ko makita ung registration form for online registration sa site… :(
sana merong shuttle
ung online registration po is sa tuktok po sa left side ang title “Register to Ku iKaika Marathon” sa itaas lamang po ng logo, paki click po.
sa shuttle po, we’ll keep u posted, always read po updates namin sa fb page namin. we are on the roads talking to these bus companies… stay on watch at https://www.facebook.com/irunnerscommunity and https://www.irunnerscommunity.org/news.php
Wow! Thanks Irunners! Now 110% sure na akong sasali (btw, ako nga rin pala yung nag-comment sa number 33 ng thread na ito). :)
Very much looking forward na talaga ako sa event na ito. Ganda ng route, pag pagod na sa kakatakbo e puwedeng i-enjoy ang view habang nagpapahinga. Honestly, this will be my first 42K tapos trail run pa.
So far e dalawa na kaming sasali sa 42K tapos may isa sa 3K. The more the merrier at para mas makamura rin sa accommodation. :)
Isa pa e taga-La Union ang father ko kaya it would be really great na mailalagay ang family name namin sa perpetual board. :)
Question lang, how does the online registration work? I’m thinking kasi kung mas magiging madali over-all kung magpupunta na lang kami sa ROX sa The Fort. Will we get our race packs as soon as we register? Paano po pag nakapag-register na tapos lumabas yung details for the transpo, how are we going to pay the additional fee?
Thanks so much!
sayang naman natapat pa sa out of town trip ko with my family… it could have been my 1st full marathon run sa province ko. btw, taga-Bacnotan ako.
goodluck to all participants pati na rin sa mga organizers… enjoy the route!
WOW sir Jaybee, salamat naman po nakakataba ng puso…at may dugo pa pala kayo na Ilocano, agyaman kami apo iti supurta yu (thank you for the support)
bout po sa inquiries nyu, kung mag oonline po kayu sir, kelangan pa na magdeposit kayu sa account namin and scan the dep.slip and send to our email..mejo maproseso po. i suggest kung malapit lamang naman kayu sa Taguig or madali mapuntahan eh dun na lamang po tayu magkita with Stan, sya ang aatend sa inyo..bababa na po sya this week bukas or makalawa…Next po ang race packs ay hindi po agad maibibigay dahil on the making pa lamang po, ibibigay po namin yan as maybe starting May 1st wk, you can claim it at any nearest reg.site to you or at the day of event here in Kahuna Resort on May 19…
Good question po yung last bout transpo..kung nakabayad na kayu at may transpo,kung libre walang problema just bibigyan namin kayu ng pass coupon, kung hindi naman at discounted lang still makakasakay po kayu, just pay the discounted fare to the reg.site in charge and he will give you a stub for the ride…for any changes and updates always visit our website or Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/irunnerscommunity https://www.irunnerscommunity.org/news.php thank you and see you here soon…

i am planning to have my 2nd full marathon through this event. any price range for the resort accomodation?
I agree po with Tryx. Since this run is promoting tourism in La Union, the provided transpo schedule should also allow participants to enjoy the resort and/or the province itself.
Post nyo na po yung details. Yun na lang po inaantay ng iba ko pang running buddies! :)
okay din sana kung may transpo na din ng saturday afternoon :)

4. Pick up time (going back to Manila) is 6:00PM on May 19, 2012.

6. Failure to catch up within the first 50 promo shuttle service, can still avail of the shuttle service by Partas Bus provided the number of these runners can reach 50 or more, these runners will pay P900 fare expenses for their travel to and back in Manila,
7. All Runners (first 50 and beyond 50) will have the same itinerary.
Thank you Runners and we hope to see you here in La Union!
to all my fellow runners from manila and places outside la union, we have posted the details about the accommodations, or hotels, inns, resorts, and transient houses in our fanpage @facebook, just type irunner for details. see you here in La Union because its more runs and more fun in la union!
@irunners: sir, paconfirm ko lang po. ung shuttle papunta ng la union is friday ng umaga?
yes po, around 8am Friday morning and going back around 6pm of Saturday….register na ba kayu sir baka mapuno na yung list ng first 50 registrants to avail of half fare discount!
@irunners: sir wala po ng shuttle friday ng gabi? para sana di kailangan mag leave from work kung mag avail ng shuttle :)
Hi irunners, sir meron lang ako suggestions sa bus schedule.
Going to La Union
– Friday, May 18. Pickup at around 6pm-7pm(depends on how long the travel time is). Tama si QP, para hindi na kailangang mag-leave at hindi na rin kailangang magbayad ng matitirhan para araw na iyon. Mas tipid at hindi pa magagamit ang leave ng empleyado.
Going back to Manila
– Kung possible sana meron din batch na pabalik ng Linggo, May 20(2pm onwards). To give runners coming from Manila enough time to enjoy your place. Relax at the bar & restaurants on Saturday evening and surf on Sunday morning. Surfing season pa ba yung May?
to all our runners friend from Manila who will join the 1st international Marathon event in our province, here is our way to accommodate all your concern regarding the shuttle service:
We will provide a coupon system for the first 50 registrants so that you will have the freedom to choose when and what time you want to go back to Manila, coupon will be given on the 18th of May, thank you.
For the other runners (beyond)50 first registrants, we bring you to the site and we will just escort everyone who wish to going back to the Partas Bus Station, But in the case that the number of runners who want to go back in Manila in one time can reach 50 then Partas Bus will pick you all up in Kahuna. So pls register as early as possible especially those who want to avail of the shuttle service both the promo and those runners who simply want to avail of the shuttle service.
kadagiti kaiLocanoak, ipakita tau ti kinaibtor ti ILOCANO… agbyag dagiti APPO ni LAMANG!
@irunners: sana merong papunta na shuttle na friday ng gabi. mahirap magcommute pag gabi, at pagdating dun, di pa familiar sa lugar. sir, baka pwede din may schedule na susundo na lang sa runners dun sa terminal ng madaling araw papunta sa venue :)) ung pabalik i think di masyado problema. most will be traveling in daylight naman, saturday or sunday, or at least early evening :)
QueenP,mam unfortunately we can only arrange for a one-time schedule of departure from manila, either alis tayo kayo dyan lahat of minsanan ng 8am or 6PM, depende sa pleasure ng karamihan. But for me the best time to pick you up (from a runner point of view) is 6am, para kahit papaano eh mag-acclimatize pa ang katawan ninyo dito sa amin. La Union temperature is different from Manila and your body deserves to adapt from another environment especially the following day(May 19)running activity would be tedious and really demanding for your body, mahirap din po abusuhin ang katawan, first and foremost we run because we want to have a sound body (and mind as well) and the purpose of running will be defeated if abuse our body.
Now, regarding the escort from the terminal to the site, first of all, all the bus will traverse just infront of the site lahat as in lahat just tell the driver na bababa kayo sa Kahuna and ibaba nila kayo doon mismo sa harap ng Resort. But incase some of the runners failed to reach the site then just text us(09491913155 or 09292914546) and we will fetch and escort you to the site or even to your resort or wherever you want to spend the night. Aalagaan at babantayan namin kayo dito as we did to our previous event, the La Union Unity Marathon so no worries po!
to all runner friends, we have posted the wonderful medals of our event in our fanpage @ facebook, just type iRunner and see the beauty and heart we put in coming up with a medal that we know you will truly value, our medal by far is the best medal you can ever receive as a runner pls see it to appreciate and pls dont forget to like our page when you fall inlove with these medals, thank you runners!
